Better Than Batman

Why Batman’s Allies Will Eclipse Him In the DCEU

by Phil Perich for the Capes and Lunatics Blog

The live action DC Universe has had it’s share of criticism in the last few years, especially after Batman V Superman set a dark tone for the DCEU.  I believe after the financial success and critical acclaim Wonder Woman generated, the powers that be realized that not every DC movie has to be “Batman Dark”, grim and gritty.  I have a theory that the upcoming (and possible future) spinoff movies starring Batman’s sidekicks and allies will surpass the current iteration of Batman in ticket sales and popularity.

NIghtwing

While I may be biased in my opinion of Nightwing, I truly believe Nightwing will be the better “Batman” movie.  Not only is Dick Grayson more human, more friendly, more “real” than his mentor, but if you set the movie in the city of Bludhaven, you get a fresh new background for the movie and Nightwing can even lead to a Teen Titans spinoff with fresher heroes that inspire humanity instead of promoting fear and maybe uplift the current heroes.

Batgirl

Just like her friend/former lover Nightwing, Barbara Gordon is much more of a people person then Batman, from her friendship with Supergirl to working with other females heroes on the Birds of Prey team.  And Barbara also has a high IQ and eidetic memory which she uses as Batgirl and were her main weapons when she was paralyzed by the Joker and become the Bat team’s info hacker Oracle.

Red Hood

Jason Todd’s spin-off movie could begin with his resurrection. It was hinted at in Batman V Superman that the Joker had killed a Robin much like he did in the comics.  Assuming the movie doesn't dwell too long on Jason’s psychotic behavior early on after his resurrection, Jason’s story could be all about redemption and rising above the darkness.

Red Robin

Tim Drake, like Barbara Gordon, is one of the smartest people ever to work with Batman.  It’s Tim’s genius that puts him a step ahead of Batman.  Not only was he proactive in his own personal war on crime in the Red Robin series instead of waiting and reacting like other heroes, he also started a charity for inner city youth.  After Dick Grayson, Tim Drake is the most likely choice to become the next Batman.
