NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 219: "Terror of the Vervoids" Is Up!

"You'd better leave me to cope with this."
"You?"
"This is a situation that requires tact and finesse.  Fortunately, I am blessed with both."
-- The Sixth Doctor and Melanie "Mel" Bush, Doctor Who: "Terror of the Vervoids"

Hello again, everyone!  I'm back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  In this episode, I'm joined by special guest companion Rachel Frend from The Five(ish) Fangirls Podcast to discuss "Terror of the Vervoids", the third serial from Doctor Who Season 23 in 1986, Parts Nine to Twelve of "The Trial of a Time Lord", featuring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, Honor Blackman as Professor Sarah Lasky, Michael Craig as Commodore Travers, and the introduction of Bonnie Langford as Melanie "Mel" Bush!

In this episode, Rachel and I discuss things like Jesse Jackson not joining us this week because of the Texas power grid crisis, Rachel's pack of Jammie Dodgers, our big Big Finish piles, vegan diets coming back to literally bite you, the original story segment "Paradise 5" from the creator of Sapphire & Steel, John Nathan-Turner thinking that the Vervoids looked like labia, the pitch of Mel's scream matching the closing theme's sting, Pip and Jane Baker really liking to make Bonnie Langford scream as Mel, the "Terror of the Vervoids" production team thinking that Janet was the murderer, the British pronunciation of "vitamin", the Sixth Doctor and Mel being comfortable with one another, Mel making the Doctor exercise, Colin Baker's "parental pounds", Colin Baker giving Rachel cuddles, Rachel and my dad having birthdays, the Sixth Doctor not being a good detective, Mel being more eager to get into trouble than Peri, Mel having the worst taste in workout music, Rudge having a really bad retirement plan, the Mogarians helping Rudge hijack the Hyperion III, Professor Lasky being all about the science, Bruchner totally freaking the hell out, Doland wanting to profit off turning the Vervoids into slaves, the Doctor being forced to play the Matrix recordings because he has nothing else to defend himself, wondering if the genocide charge against the Doctor is justified, wondering if Jenna Coleman is tinier than Bonnie Langford, companions needing a "Doctor in Distress" phone app, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac, Dave Proctor, Jeff Hilke, and Jesse Jackson (!), Rachel being impatient for color films on Gold Standard: The Oscars Podcast, Xan Sprouse and I watching David Lynch's G-rated film The Straight Story, and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 218: "Mindwarp" Is Up!

"Today, prudence shall be our watchword.  Tomorrow, I shall soak the land in blood!"
-- King Yrcanos, Doctor Who: "Mindwarp"

Hello again, everyone!  My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  In this episode, we're joined by special guest companion Rachel Frend from The Five(ish) Fangirls Podcast to discuss "Mindwarp", the second serial from Doctor Who Season 23 in 1986, Parts Five to Eight of "The Trial of a Time Lord", featuring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, Brian Blessed as King Yrcanos, the return of Nabil Shaban as Sil, and the departure of Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown!

In this episode, Jesse, Rachel and I discuss things like doing the Mindwarp again, Philip Martin's later Sixth Doctor stories with Sil, Rachel's creepy Sil impression, the extremely convoluted story, Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon, Christopher Ryan and Trevor Laird appearing in both the classic and modern eras, Colin Baker being confused by the Doctor's behavior in "Mindwarp" and getting no help from anyone, Brian Blessed dropping f-bombs during production, Peri being killed because Nicola Bryant really wanted to play a villain, King Yrcanos becoming a professional wrestler on Earth, how I would've wrote the Doctor's portrayal in this story, Peri being stuck babysitting King Yrcanos, wishing Peri had a better sendoff for her final story, Crozier being way too laid-back, Nabil Shaban getting his Sil laugh from a snake, Rachel vs. barometric pressure, Nabil Shaban and Colin Baker eating peaches with food coloring, the Time Lords once again being hypocritical jerks about their non-interference policy, the Doctor not trusting anyone to defend him, the Time Lords using Yrcanos as their assassin, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac, Dave Proctor and Jeff Hilke, Rachel hating It's a Wonderful Life, Ricardo Montalban's chest in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 217: "The Mysterious Planet" Is Up!

"Planets come and go.  Stars perish.  Matter disperses, coalesces, forms into other patterns, other worlds.  Nothing can be eternal."
-- The Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: "The Mysterious Planet"

Hello again, everyone!  My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  In this episode, we're joined by special guest companion Rachel Frend from The Five(ish) Fangirls Podcast to discuss "The Mysterious Planet", Parts One to Four of "The Trial of a Time Lord", the first serial from Doctor Who Season 23 in 1986, featuring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown, and introducing Michael Jayston as The Valeyard and Tony Selby as Sabalom Glitz!

In this episode, Jesse, Rachel and I discuss things like the magic words that make Rachel appear, why Rachel loves the Sixth Doctor so much, "The Trial of a Time Lord" being a metaphor for the Doctor Who TV series being on trial by the BBC, the Big Finish appearances of Michael Jayston as The Valeyard, the full Gallifreyan name for the Inquisitor, the BBC announcing that the original plans for Season 23 were cancelled, the horrible charity single "Doctor in Distress", the four Season 23 stories being considered one long 14-part story "The Trial of a Time Lord", John Nathan-Turner wanting to switch from film recording to videotape back during Peter Davison's first season, Roger Brierley not being able to fit the Drathro robot costume, the introduction of the Valeyard and the Inquisitor and the trial framing sequences, the Sixth Doctor finding out he was deposed as Lord President of Gallifrey, the Inquisitor actually being fair to the Doctor, Jesse wondering if there was an arrest warrant and charges for the Doctor, Colin Baker hamming it up during the courtroom scenes, Peri getting a better hairstyle and actual pants, the Sixth Doctor and Peri's contentious relationship becoming much more friendly, Peri trying to make the Doctor understand that she's upset over what happened to Earth, the introduction of Tony Selby as Sabalom Glitz, Queen Katryca wanting to share Peri with the men of her tribe, Balazar pissing off the Sixth Doctor by calling him "Old One", Drathro getting checkmated by Glitz and Dibber, our favorite quotes of the episode, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new feedback from Holly Mac, Dave Proctor and Jeff Hilke, Glitz resetting the Brigadier's "Five rounds rapid" line, my pick for the Fourteenth Doctor, Jesse and I talking WandaVision on The Fandom Zone Podcast, DJ Nik and I talking Wonder Woman on The Five(ish) Fangirls Podcast, doing the Mindwarp again, and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 216: "Resurrection of the Daleks" Is Up!

"You want to stay on Earth?"
"My Aunt Vanessa said, when I became an air stewardess, if you stop enjoying it, give it up."
"Tegan..."
"It's stopped being fun, Doctor.  Goodbye."
-- The Fifth Doctor and Tegan Jovanka, Doctor Who: "Resurrection of the Daleks"

Hello again, everyone!  My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  In this episode, we're joined by special guest companion Xan Sprouse to discuss "Resurrection of the Daleks", the fourth serial from Doctor Who Season 21 in 1984, featuring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough, Terry Molloy as Davros, and the departure of Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka!

In this episode, Jesse, Xan and I discuss things like Jesse engaging in Revenge Podcasting, Tegan being the first of the mass exit to leave before the Colin Baker era, Xan watching this story at the Grandview Theater in Columbus, this story being the first one in the modern 45-minute episode format, Peter Grimwade originally directing the story before John Nathan-Turner became slighted by not being invited out to a production dinner, Michael Wisher being replaced as Davros by Terry Molloy, Xan being sidetracked by a Fifth Doctor fantasy, "Resurrection of the Daleks" being the opening salvo in the Time War, the Doctor's intense hatred of the Daleks, Davros being great at pushing the Doctor's buttons, the Doctor's regret for not destroying the Daleks in "Genesis of the Daleks", Tegan's departure compared to Ben and Polly's departures, Tegan's departure reminding the Doctor of why he originally left Gallifrey, the missed opportunity of exploring the Fifth Doctor's darker side, male companions being sidekicks to the female companions, Lytton being recruited by the Daleks to spring Davros from Space Jail, the dorky Dalek helmets to make Lytton and his men to look more like Daleks, JNT not being innovative with more limited budgets, Styles pulling a Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon, the Daleks and the Movellans stalemating each other in their war, two Daleks being used over and over to look like a bunch of Daleks, Davros falling victim to the Movellan Virus, Davros as Donald Trump, our favorite quotes of the episode, new feedback from Holly Mac and Dave Proctor, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, trying to get Xan to check out WandaVision, Rachel joining us for the entire "Trial of a Time Lord", and more!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 215: "The Faceless Ones" Is Up!

"What's a passport?"
"Oh, some sort of official mumbo-jumbo."
-- Jamie McCrimmon and the Second Doctor, Doctor Who: "The Faceless Ones"

Hello again, everyone!  My partner in time Jesse Jackson and I are back with a new episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast!  In this episode, we discuss "The Faceless Ones", the eighth serial from Doctor Who Season Four in 1967, featuring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon, Pauline Collins as Samantha Briggs, and the departures of Michael Craze as Ben Jackson and Anneke Wills as Polly Wright!

In this episode, Jesse and I discuss things like celebrating the inauguration of President Joe Biden, celebrating the birthdays of Tom Baker and David Lynch, Jesse watching all episodes of "The Faceless Ones" in animation, the infinite stupidity of the BBC junking Doctor Who episodes from the Hartnell and Troughton eras, fans saving the original audio by recording the episodes on home recorders, my preference for tangible media, Wanda Ventham being Benedict Cumberbatch's mom, classic companions never becoming romantically involved or marrying one another, the passport scene as "Who's on First?", the Doctor playing the fool so that his enemies underestimate him, Gatwick Airport security not caring about a dead body, Ben and Polly deciding they've had enough of traveling in the TARDIS, D.I. Crossland being the only one who takes the Doctor seriously, Polly getting replaced by a Chameleon, "The Faceless Ones" having strong female characters for 1967, Blade flipping on the Chameleon Leader to save his own life, wanting animated Big Finish Doctor Who audios, our favorite quotes of the episode, new feedback from Holly Mac, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, Jesse's friend John being converted into a Whovian, and more!

"And I know who you are."
"Ah.  Yes.  Yes...Yes, you do.  Yes.  Awkward."
"And you weren’t going to tell me."
"Well, it’s just the Abbess warned against it and I didn’t want to interfere with my own history…"
"Ah…Well, shouldn’t I have a say?"
"You do have a say.  I mean, you have to wait to be me to say it."
-- The Fourth Doctor and the Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who: "Out of Time"

"I’m not who I thought I was, Ryan.  What I always knew to be the story of my life isn’t true.  I wasn’t born on Gallifrey.  Where I’m from, all the lives I’ve lived…some of that has been hidden from me and I don’t even know how much."
"Things change all the time, and they should, ‘cause they have to.  Same with people. Sometimes we get a bit scared ‘cause…new can be a bit scary, right?"

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE 209: "Aliens of London" Is Up!

"Well, you can stay here if you want.  But right now, there's this plasma storm brewing in the Horsehead Nebula.  Fires are burning ten million miles wide.  I could fly the TARDIS right into the heart of it, then ride the shock wave all the way out, hurtle right across the sky and end up...anywhere.  Your choice."
-- The Ninth Doctor to Rose Tyler, Doctor Who: "World War Three"

That's why we're all here, and that's why we're alive!"
