THE FLASH Casts Jordan Fisher as Impulse

DC Comics' most impulsive speedster is heading to the small screen.

Variety is reporting that The CW series The Flash has cast Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen, better known to DC Comics fans as the superhero Impulse.  According to the article, Fisher will debut as Impulse in the series’ 150th episode, which is also the 17th episode of The Flash Season 7.

The character is described as "the future son of Barry aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) and is said to be 'the fastest teenager on the planet'.  However, due to his penchant for 'wildly impulsive behavior', Barry and Iris will have their hands full trying to teach him patience — which will be a necessity if they want to succeed, not only as a family unit, but also in stopping the biggest threat to the Flash yet."

Fisher, 26, is an actor, singer, dancer, and musician who has previously appeared on the TV series Teen Wolf, Bones, The Secret Life of an American Teenager and Liv and Maddie.  He also voiced the character Sea Hawk on the animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and was the winner of Dancing with the Stars Season 25.

Created in 1994 by Mark Waid and Mike Weiringo, Impulse first appeared in The Flash (vol.2) #92 as Bart Allen, the grandson of Barry Allen, the second Flash, and son of Don Allen (one of the Tornado Twins) and Meloni Thawne (a descendant of Eobard Thawne).  Born with full super-speed and suffering from a hyper-accelerated metabolism, Bart Allen was aging at a faster rate than that of any other human being, causing him to appear to be the age of twelve when he was chronologically only two years old.  To prevent him from developing mental health problems, he was raised in a virtual reality machine which created a simulated world that kept pace with his own scale of time.  When it became clear that this method was not helping, his grandmother, Iris Allen, took him back in time to the present where the third Flash, Wally West, tricked Bart into a race around the world.  By forcing Bart into an extreme burst of speed, Wally managed to shock his hyper metabolism back to normal.

Because Bart had spent the majority of his childhood in a simulated world, he had no concept of danger and was prone to leaping before he looked.  The youth proved to be more trouble than Wally could handle, and he was given over to retired superhero speedster Max Mercury, who moved Bart to Manchester, Alabama.  As the teenaged superhero Impulse, Bart joined the Titans early in his career before going on to become one of the founding members of the superhero team Young Justice, alongside Robin (Tim Drake) and Superboy (Conner Kent).

Shortly after Bart joined the Teen Titans, he was shot in the knee by Deathstroke (who at the time was possessed by Jericho) and received a prosthetic replacement.  While recovering, Bart read every single book in the San Francisco Public Library and reinvented himself as the second Kid Flash.  Once healed, the artificial knee did not affect his ability to run at speeds approaching that of light, but reminding him that he needs to think first rather than to act impulsively.

Recently, in the era known as DC Rebirth, Bart returned to the main DC universe after Wally West and Barry Allen broke the Speed Force Barrier. Once again wearing the Impulse costume, he emerged from the Speed Force and raced through a city street triumphantly declaring that he was back.  Shortly afterwards, he reunited with his former Young Justice and Teen Titans teammates Robin and Wonder Girl (Cassandra Sandsmark).  Bart was the main driving force behind the revival of the Young Justice team, and after being transported to Gemworld and reunited with Superboy, the team officially re-formed.

Fisher will be the second actor to portray Impulse in live-action, after Kyle Gallner on the WB/CW series Smallville.  The character has also appeared on the animated series Young Justice and Young Justice: Outsiders, voiced by Jason Marsden.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

THE FLASH Movie Casts Sasha Calle as Supergirl

The DC Extended Universe just got its own Supergirl.

Deadline has word that the upcoming DC Extended Universe film The Flash, starring Ezra Miller as The Flash/Barry Allen, has cast Latina actress Sasha Calle as Superman's cousin, Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.

According to the article, Calle was chosen from more than 425 actresses who auditioned.  The actresses weren’t informed what part they were reading for, until very late in the process. Calle also did a chemistry read with Miller.

The Flash director Andy Muschietti watched all the auditions and reportedly "was blown away by the actress’ toughness and vulnerability that she brought to the role."  "I saw more than four hundred auditions," remarked Muschietti.  "The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role."

Calle, 25, is best known as Lola Rosales on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, where she was nominated last year in the Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama series category at the Daytime Emmys.  She has also appeared in the short films The White Shoes and Final Stop.

Created in 1959 by Otto Binder, Al Plastino and Curt Swan, Supergirl first appeared in Action Comics (vol.1) #252 as Kara Zor-El, the daughter of Jor-El's brother Zor-El and cousin to Superman. She was the last survivor of Argo City, which had survived the destruction of the planet Krypton until meteorites of Green Kryptonite penetrated Argo City's protective barrier. Sent to Earth by Zor-El to be raised by her cousin, Kara acquired powers similar to Superman and adopted the secret identity of Linda Lee, a young girl at Midvale Orphanage.

In the New 52 continuity, Kara's ship lands as part of a meteor shower in Smallville, Kansas, but burrows through the Earth and emerges in Siberia. Kara has no memory of the destruction of Krypton and believes herself to be dreaming. The military tracks her arrival, and a group of American soldiers in mechanized suits immediately attack her. Her powers start emerging as the fight goes on and terrify the surprised Kara. Superman arrives after she defeats the soldiers and tries to convince Kara that he is her cousin, but Kara, still believing that only three days have passed since she last saw baby Kal, accuses him of being an imposter and attacks him. Eventually, Kara accepts that Krypton has been destroyed and that Superman is indeed her grown-up cousin.

Calle will be the fourth actress to portray the character in live action, after Melissa Benoist on the CBS/CW TV series SupergirlLaura Vandervoort on WB/CW series Smallvilleand Helen Slater in the 1984 film Supergirl that was a spinoff from the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.  The character has also appeared a number of times in animation, including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited (voiced by Nicholle Tom), and the Super Best Friends Forever DC Nation animated shorts (voiced by Nicole Sullivan).

The Flash is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 4, 2022.

STARGIRL Casts Jonathan Cake as The Shade & Nick Tarabay as Eclipso

Get ready for more injustice in Blue Valley.

Deadline has revealed that the CW series Stargirl has cast actors Jonathan Cake and Nick Tarabay as DC Comics supervillains The Shade and Eclipso.  Tarabay will be a series regular as Eclipso, while Cake will recur as The Shade.

According to the article, Eclipso is described as "one of the main antagonists set to clash with Stargirl’s Justice Society of America in Season 2.  Eclipso is a life essence trapped inside a blue diamond. Once owned by the Injustice Society of America, that diamond was stolen in Season 1 by (Meg) DeLacy’s Cindy (Burman), which will result in problems for the JSA going forward.  Eclipso is an ancient entity of corruption and vengeance.  Brimming with a cold, terrifying darkness, he exploits the flaws of others, reveling in the impure and sinful, sadistically feeding off the dark side of humanity."

The Shade's description states he's "an English immortal, a classic antihero from DC Comics who wields magical shadow powers.  Tall and slim with an elegant 19th century way to his speech and manners, he masks the horrors he’s experienced and people he’s lost in all the time alive with wry, witty retorts and a false sense that nothing really matters."

Cake, 53, is an English actor who recently appeared as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach on Legends of Tomorrow, and has appeared in episodes of Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, The Affair, Chuck, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Criminal Minds, and Death in Paradise.

Tarabay, 45, is a Lebanon-born American actor best known as Captain Boomerang on Arrow, Ashur on Spartacus and Cotyar Ghazi on The Expanse.  His other roles include the films Star Trek Into Darkness and Pacific Rim: Uprising, and episodes of Castle, Longmire, Person of Interest, Burn Notice, Moonlight, and The Sopranos.

Created in 1942 by Gardner Fox and Harold Wilson Sharp, the Shade first appeared in Flash Comics #33 as a villain for the original Flash, Jay Garrick.  He was portrayed as a thief who could manipulate the shadows with a magical cane and fought both Garrick and the second Flash, Barry Allen.  He was a member of several supervillain teams, including the Injustice Society.  The Shade was one of three villains used for the first meeting of the two heroes in the famous "Flash of Two Worlds" story, which reintroduced the Golden Age Flash to the Silver Age.  He was jailed along with the Thinker and the Fiddler.

In 1994, the character was changed drastically by writer James Robinson and artist Tony Harris in the DC Comics series Starman.  The Shade was retconned to an English gentleman named Richard Swift, a young man from the year 1838.  One night in London, Swift was trapped amidst an unexplained mystical tragedy, which killed 104 people.  The most immediate effect on him was the permanent loss of his memories prior to the incident.  Coincidentally, a passerby named Piers Ludlow offers to take in Swift while he recovers. The whole affair was a setup, with the Ludlow family being a band of killers and swindlers, who grew wealthy killing their wealthy business partners and then killing a vagrant in the vicinity to give the impression of a failed robbery/homicide.  Before they could make Swift their next scapegoat, he reflexively unleashed his shadows, killing all the present Ludlows.  Only a young pair of twins, absent from the excursion, survived.

Decades later, Swift was ambushed by Rupert Ludlow, one of the surviving twins.  Rupert and his sister had plotted revenge for years, going so far as to raise their children as future assassins.  Though grievously injured, Swift managed to kill Ludlow, as his shadow power made him both immortal and resistant to injury.  Afterward, he left England and started a career as an adventurer/assassin/observer on life, which spanned whole continents and led him to many adventures.  During World War II, the Shade arrived in Keystone City and chose Jay Garrick, the first Flash, as his adversary.  After several decades, he established himself in Opal City and became a mentor for Jack Knight, the son of the Golden Age Starman, Ted Knight, another hero the Shade had fought.

Cake will be the second actor to portray The Shade in live-action, after Mike McLeod on The Flash (2014).  The character has also appeared in various animated projects, including Justice League and Justice League Unlimited (voiced by Stephen McHattie), and Young Justice: Outsiders (voiced by Joel Swetow).

Eclipso was created in 1963 by Bob Haney and Lee Elias, first appearing in House of Secrets #61 as Bruce Gordon, a scientist specializing in solar energy.  While in the jungle to view a solar eclipse, Gordon was attacked by a tribal sorcerer named Mophir.  Before plunging to his death off a cliff, Mophir wounded Gordon with a black diamond.  Afterwards, Gordon transformed into the villainous Eclipso whenever an eclipse occurred.  A blue-gray or purple circle covered the rightmost two-thirds of his face, resembling a partial eclipse.

During this period, Eclipso was portrayed as a conventional villain, possessing super strength, partial invulnerability, and eye blasts (aided by his black diamond).  Eclipso's transformations were later altered so that any type of natural eclipse, lunar or solar, would cause Eclipso and Gordon to split from one another, while an "artificial eclipse" -- an object blocking out a light source -- would merely transform Gordon to Eclipso.  Any bright flash of light would banish Eclipso back into Bruce Gordon's body or reverse the change.

In the early 1990s, DC Comics retconned Eclipso in a company-wide crossover built around the miniseries Eclipso: The Darkness Within.  Eclipso was revealed not simply to be Bruce Gordon's dark half, but a vengeance demon who had possessed Gordon.  Eclipso's soul had originally been bound inside a giant black diamond called the "Heart of Darkness" in Africa.  A treasure hunter found it in the late nineteenth century and brought it to London in 1891, where he had a jeweler cut it into one thousand shards.  This weakened the binding spell, allowing Eclipso to possess anyone who became angry while in contact with one of the shards.  He was no longer limited to possessing Gordon during an eclipse, but pretended otherwise so that Gordon would not know the truth about the black diamonds.

Tarabay will be the first actor to portray Eclipso in live-action.  The character has appeared in animated projects, however, including Justice League (voiced by Bruce McGill) and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

Stargirl is expected to return to The CW for Season 2 sometime in 2021.

Michael Keaton in Talks to Reprise Bruce Wayne for DC Universe Films

You know, Bruce Wayne's life is really complex.

Deadline has confirmed reports that Michael Keaton is in early talks to return to his role of Batman/Bruce Wayne for Warner Bros.' upcoming DC Extended Universe films.

According to the article, Keaton would reprise his version of Bruce Wayne "in a Nick Fury-like role starting with Warner Bros. The Flash starring Ezra Miller, and could continue to play the Dark Knight in other upcoming DC movies like Batgirl.  Reportedly, the Keaton Batman won’t impact the mythology being hammered out by Matt Reeves’ reboot The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, and it will pick up his story line after Batman Returns."

Reportedly, The Flash film, to be directed by Andy Muschietti, will feature elements of the Flashpoint storyline from DC Comics and introduce the concept of the multiverse involving alternate Earths similar to what was recently depicted in the CW Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths.  Presumably, Keaton's Batman/Bruce Wayne would come from one of those alternate Earths and be a character that connects various DC Universe superhero films to one another.

Keaton, 68, previously played Batman/Bruce Wayne in the films Batman (1989) and Batman Returns.  His other films include Beetlejuice, Birdman, Johnny Dangerously, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Mr. Mom, Night Shift, Robocop (2014), Jackie Brown, Minions, Toy Story 3, Jack Frost, Multiplicity, Pacific Heights, and Clean and Sober.  His television appearances include episodes of The Simpsons, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Frasier, King of the Hill, and The Mary Tyler Moore Hour.

The Flash is currently expected to arrive in theaters on June 3, 2022.

Civilizations rose and fell...and rose again to cross realities grasping expanse.  Life, a precious gift persevering in the face of every obstacle...until, finally, the Age of Heroes was born."

The CW Arrowverse Casts Stephen Lobo as The Spectre

What the Spectre fears may destroy us all.

IGN has revealed that actor Stephen Lobo has been cast for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earths" as Detective Jim Corrigan, better known to DC Comics fans as the supernatural antihero The Spectre.

According to the article, "the network isn't confirming whether The Spectre himself will appear, though given the character's role in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comic, that seems a distinct possibility."

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim remarked, "Fans of the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic know the Spectre plays a pivotal role.  We’re thrilled Stephen is our Jim Corrigan."

Lobo, 45, is a Canadian-British actor probably best known as Matthew Kellog on the Syfy series Continuum.  He's appeared in episodes of Supernatural, The X-Files, Smallvillle, Fringe, Painkiller Jane, Colony, Zoo, Arctic Air, and The Dead Zone.

Created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and artist Bernard Baily, The Spectre first appeared in 1940's More Fun Comics #52 as Jim Corrigan, a hard-boiled cop who was on his way to his engagement party until was he murdered by being stuffed into a barrel filled with cement and then drowned.  His spirit was refused entry into the afterlife however, instead being sent back to Earth by a supernatural entity referred to only as "The Voice" to eradicate evil.  Assuming the identity of The Spectre, Corrigan begins seeking vengeance against his murderers in grim, supernatural ways.  Breaking off his engagement with his fiancée Clarice, Corrigan continues his crusade, becoming the Spectre whenever he's needed.

During the event known as Crisis on Infinite Earths, The Spectre united superheroes and supervillains by warning them about the threat of the Anti-Monitor.  The heroes traveled back in time to stop the Anti-Monitor, while the villains traveled back in time to the ancient planet Oa to prevent renegade scientist Krona from creating the technology necessary for the Anti-Monitor's plan to succeed.  The villains failed, and Krona continued his experiment. The Anti-Monitor waited for Alexander Luthor to reopen the portal between the positive and antimatter universes, capturing the heroes, but the magically empowered Spectre created an energy overload which shattered space and time.  The five Earths merged into a single shared universe, and the superheroes returned to the present, with only those present at the dawn of time remembering the original realities.

In the current New 52 continuity, Corrigan is a Gotham City Police Detective whose fiancee is kidnapped.  Guided by the Phantom Stranger on the instructions of The Voice, the Stranger leads Corrigan to the abandoned warehouse where she is being kept, but this turns out to be a trap.  Jim Corrigan and his girlfriend are murdered by the kidnappers and he is then transformed into The Spectre, who accuses the Phantom Stranger of betraying him.  As the Spectre is about to attack the Phantom Stranger, The Voice intervenes and sends the Spectre off to inflict his wrath on those who are more deserving.

Lobo will be the second actor to portray The Spectre in live-action, after Emmett J. Scanlan in the NBC series Constantine.  The character has also appeared in the animated short DC Showcase: The Spectre (voiced by Gary Cole) and on the series Batman: The Brave and the Bold (voiced by Mark Hamill).

The "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover event begins with the CW series Supergirl on December 8, 2019.

Andy Muschietti in Talks to Direct THE FLASH Movie, Still Starring Ezra Miller

Fourth time's the charm?

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Warner Bros. is in talks with Andy Muschietti to direct The Flash solo movie, with star Ezra Miller still attached to reprise his role of The Flash/Barry Allen.  His partner and sister, Barbara Muschietti, will produce the film along with Michael Disco.

Christina Hodson, the writer behind Bumblebee and upcoming DC Extended Universe movie Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is reportedly being hired to handle the script, with the goal to be in prep by January 2020.

Muschietti, 45, is an Argentine director and screenwriter best known as the director of It and It Chapter Two, based on the novel It by Stephen King.  He also directed and co-wrote the 2013 supernatural horror film Mama, based on his 2008 Argentine short film Mamá.

Muschietti will be the fourth director(s) to helm the project, after John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote drafts of the script and were slated to direct a version of the DC Comics limited series Flashpoint, moved on.  Tensions over creative differences slowed down the project, regarding what vision was the best fit for a Flash movie.  Miller, who has played the character since in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, reportedly favored a darker approach, while Goldstein and Daley wanted the opposite.  Director Rick Famuyiwa left the project in October 2016, citing "creative differences" as the reason.  Famuyiwa had replaced Seth Grahame-Smith, who also left the project in April 2016 and also cited "creative differences" as his reason.

According to the article, Daley, Goldstein and Miller had been working on compromises since last year, but Miller took it upon himself to write his own script, enlisting the aid of former Flash comics writer Grant Morrison.  That script was submitted to the studio in March.  The studio rejected his approach by May, but decided that Miller should still remain as the Fastest Man Alive.
